Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
